The fundamental characteristics of permanent magnet ferrite magnets

Update: 2022-07-29

Permanent ferrite magnets are objects made from materials that are magnetized and create their own persistent magnetic field. An everyday example is the fridge magnet used to keep notes on the fridge door. Materials that can be magnetized, that is, materials that are strongly attracted by a magnet, are called ferromagnetism (or ferrimagnetism). These include iron, nickel, cobalt, certain rare earth metal alloys, and some naturally occurring minerals such as iron ore. While ferromagnetic (and ferrimagnetic) materials are the only ones that are strongly attracted to magnets (often considered magnetic), all other substances respond weakly to magnetic fields through one of several other types of magnetism.

Ferrite magnet processing

Ferrites are brittle and therefore break easily. Therefore, when using ferrites, we use special processing techniques. Goudsmit Magnetics is fully equipped to handle these materials to your design specifications.

Surface treatment of ferrite

One of the great advantages of ferrite magnets is that no surface treatment is required because ferrites are inert and therefore do not oxidize. For example, various epoxy coatings can always be applied to ferrite magnets from a hygiene point of view.

Precautions when using ferrite

Ferrite is hard and brittle. When the material is dropped, the pieces break off. This must be kept in mind when using these magnets.
